My clinical practice brings together, in a synthesis more than two decades in the making, four traditions: relational psychodynamic theory, systemic and family therapy, existential-humanistic inquiry and trauma-informed approaches. At the centre of the practice is the therapeutic alliance: a collaborative, analytic dialogue in which the person can be heard and, in time, understood.

The pace of the work is not imposed but found between the person and me, in what the person feels, what they can bear and what they want to change. People often ask how long therapy lasts. Work of any depth usually runs to months or years rather than weeks, though it is not meant to be open-ended. Sessions are once or twice a week and are best held in person, though they can also take place online (e.g. Google Meet, Zoom) where appropriate.

Clinical experience

In the twenty-three years since qualifying, I have completed more than 25,000 clinical hours in settings that run from community and primary care services to acute psychiatric inpatient units. The people I have worked with have ranged from adolescents and young adults to established professionals, those working in the arts and older people, and have come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds across Britain. Much of what I know about this work I have learned in the room, one person at a time.

Fees and practical arrangements

Fees for therapy and clinical supervision are £68–£115 a session. A reduced fee can be discussed in some circumstances.

My consulting room in Nayland is fully accessible to wheelchair users and has ample parking.
